Pet Nutrition

A healthy, complete and balanced diet is essential for your pet’s health. A good diet keeps your pet’s coat shiny and healthy, strengthens the immune system, keeps the digestive system working properly, and helps support all organ systems in your pet’s body.

For our canine patients:

For healthy dogs, we recommend sticking with the “tried but true” brands of dog food such as Hill’s Science Diet, Purina, Royal Canin, Iams, and Eukanuba for most pets. These brands have excellent quality control, veterinary nutritionists on their teams, and years of retrospective data to prove that dog’s live long, healthy lives when fed these diets.

For dogs with a specific medical condition, please talk to our veterinarians about their recommendations. They may need to prescribe a specific diet for your dog or suggest a home-cooked diet. There is a lot of misinformation on the internet and advertised on commercials these days making it difficult to know who or what to believe. Talk to our veterinary team if you have questions about what diet is best for your pet.

For our feline patients:

For healthy cats, we recommend feeding primarily pate canned food, such as Fancy Feast, Sheba or others.

For cats with a specific medical condition, please talk to our veterinarians about their recommendations. They may need to prescribe a specific diet for your cat based on the specific medical issue or disease that he/she is dealing with. Talk to our veterinary team if you have questions about what diet is best for your pet.

Obesity in Pets

Obesity shortens your pet’s life and makes then more likely to develop disease. A recent study in Labrador Retrievers found that being even moderately overweight can reduce a dog’s lifespan by up to 2 years!

Obese pets are at increased risk for many types of cancer, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, early onset arthritis, and even anesthetic complications. Obesity can also be an indicator of diseases such as hypothyroidism and Cushing’s disease.
